Smart Sign by Alerting Solutions
ASI has integrated electronic signage with its Next Generation CAP Alert suite of warning products, to display messages controlled by its Common Alerting Protocol server.
Best practices for notification on college campuses indicate that a mixed media approach to emergency communication will garner a higher degree of effective response than a one-dimensional approach. For example, supplementing audio alerts with visual alerts is an important step toward creating a complete program for mass notification.
Visual alerts can be turned on for longer time that voice messages, repeating the message as long as needed for better warning, and do not require special receivers or subscription.
As the demand for improved preparedness outpaces the funding and grants available for this type of solution, administrators are looking for value-added investments that serve a practical day-to-day purpose in addition to an emergency communication solution.
Coordinate public address and visual messaging systems for optimal reach, especially for large congregation spaces like student unions, cafeterias and lecture halls to minimize the impact of noise often accompanying a crisis and support the disabled population as required under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Smart Sign contain three levels of display priority.
-
On a daily basis, when there is no important message to communicate, the devices default to a synchronized time and date display.
-
Medium priority level messages, such as event reminders override this time and date display when necessary.
-
The highest level of priority overrides all other messaging and prominently displays the emergency notification message.
This ultimate functionality may become necessary in the case of severe weather, an intruder on campus, or a number of other unexpected emergency situations.
Smart LEDs are “green” devices, utilizing cutting-edge Power over the Ethernet (PoE) technology to minimize the wattage used to power the display. Therefore, the money saved on operating the system alone becomes substantial over time:
- For visual displays, LED signs deliver crisp, clear messages to large areas.
- LEDs are brighter than LCD screens and can be read easily at more than 100 feet, even through smoke and dust. (LCDs have up to 20-foot viewing range and limited viewing angle.)
- LED displays are durable, with an expected life of more than 10 years (three times that of LCDs)
- LED displays consume far less power than LCDs. Ethernet-powered displays can use redundant network power to survive outages
